How to choose a sofa in Nigeria (and what the showroom will not tell you)

Most sofas sold in Nigeria fail in the same three places, in the same order, and none of them are visible on the showroom floor. Here is what to press on before you pay.

Press down on the arm, hard

The arm is the honest part of a sofa. If it flexes, the frame is stapled softwood or — worse — particle board with a decorative cap. A properly built arm does not move at all, because it is corner-blocked hardwood, glued and screwed.

Ask what the frame is made of. If nobody in the building can answer, that is the answer.

Sit down and stay down for five minutes

A foam that feels luxurious in the first ten seconds is often too soft, and too-soft foam is what collapses. What you want is a seat that pushes back slightly and keeps pushing back after five minutes.

The number to ask for is foam density. Anything under 30kg/m³ in a seat cushion will flatten within two years of daily use. We build at 35kg/m³ and up.

Fabric is a climate decision, not a colour decision

Harmattan dust and coastal humidity attack fabrics differently. In the south-west you want a tight weave that dust sits on top of rather than sinking into, and a fibre that does not hold moisture.

• Performance weaves — best all-round choice for a family house. Wipeable, tight, colourfast.
• Full-grain leather — excellent in dry heat, needs conditioning twice a year, ages beautifully.
• Velvet — gorgeous, and a dust magnet. Choose it for a formal sitting room that is not the main room.
• Bonded leather — avoid entirely. It peels. There is no exception to this.

The delivery question nobody asks

Measure your stairwell, your lift and your narrowest doorway before you buy anything over two metres. A sofa that will not go up is a total loss, and no amount of goodwill from the maker changes the physics.

What a real budget looks like

A genuinely well-built three-seater with a hardwood frame and high-resilience foam starts around ₦900,000 in 2026. Below roughly ₦450,000 you are buying softwood, low-density foam and a two-to-three-year life. That is a legitimate choice — just make it knowingly.
